8 Qualities of Engagement to Plan Your Lessons

Teachers hear a lot about engagement.
But what exactly is engagement?
Engagement involves:
- Attention
- Curiosity
- Interest
- Optimism
- Passion
Engagement means you are tapping into their emotions. And if there’s one thing you learn about the neuroscience of learning it should be this:
“Emotion drives cognition.”
Science has identified 8 qualities of engagement.
If you have at least 3 of these qualities in each assignment, students show sustained cognitive engagement
84 to 86 percent of the time!
But guess what happens if you have less?
When only two qualities were present, students were only cognitively engaged about 16 percent of the time.
Only 1 quality?
That number dropped to less than four percent.
That’s a big drop!
